What is Plasma?

Plasma is, without a doubt, the most the most common form of matter in the universe. There is plasma in all of the stars and in the space that is between them making up about 99% of everything visible in the universe.

Here on Earth, we exist on regular matter. What we commonly call matter here is made up of solids, liquids and gasses. Since the beginning of time we humans have lived knowing only these three states of matter and that’s all there was.

In 1879, an English physicist named Sir William Crookes discovered a fourth state of matter, what we now call plasma. He originally called it ‘radiant matter’. It was first found in a Crookes tube, which is very similar to the modern day cathode ray tube (CRT). Using these Crookes tubes, not only was plasma discovered but electrons as well. In modern use the cathode ray tube is used in televisions. Irving Langmuir dubbed this discovery ‘plasma’ in 1928.

Plasma is described as an electrically neutral medium of positive and negatively charged particles. Basically this means that plasma is neither positively nor negatively charged unless something is introduced into it to alter its natural neutral state.

Where is Plasma found?

As stated above, plasma is extremely common in the universe as it is found everywhere and in almost everything, including all the ‘empty’ space in space. In outer space, plasma is considered to be very alive and hot with all the activity it is has.

  • Lightning
  • Fluorescent Lights
  • Neon Signs
  • Plasma Televisions
  • Primordial fusion at the creation of the universe
  • The Northern and Southern Lights

Plasma is all around us and, for the most part, we never really know it’s there at all. That’s where science has come in and found ways to manipulate this amazing and abundant form of matter into the many uses and commercial items we have all around.

What Common Items are Made Using Plasma?

There are many practical uses for this all too common form of matter. We use them daily and never really realize that we are using something that is a building block of the entire universe and its creation. Plasma is neither a solid, a liquid or a gas, although it most resembles the latter as gasses are made up of electrically neutral components, plasma is made up of the those building blocks of all matter; electrically charged particles at high energy.

In everyday life, plasma can be found in a number of commercial items that we use every single day of our life.

In a fluorescent light bulb the plasma fills the glass tubes and lights up when an electrical charge is placed through that tube. The same can be said for neon lights but this time the light is varied to a certain color spectrum or through tinted glass. The greatest source of energy we know of, the Sun, is a big ball of super hot plasma and without that, there would be no life on this planet. At the north and south poles of this planet we are also treated to a light show courtesy of plasma and the energy and magnetic radiation from the sun. The Northern and Southern lights are a wide plasma light show that has mesmerized people for as long as there have been people around to watch it.

One of the most recent and popular uses of plasma and all new technologies is the plasma television. Taking the old heavy and bulky television sets we are all used to seeing and replacing them with a smaller, thinned, less heavy and more clear alternative is all due to plasma. Sandwiched in-between two thin panes of glass, plasma is sealed inside with a lot of incredibly tiny technology that allows an image to be created on the screen through this plasma gas. Using the basic principals of a traditional television, the image is still created using microscopic individual lights made up of even smaller sets of three colored pixels of red, green and blue. Using a computer to control the level of color intensity from each pixel, an unbelievably crisp picture is created through the plasma and onto the screen.

Without a doubt, plasma has crept into our lives making some serious changes and they all seem to be for the better. With lighting the energy needed to light a bulb is considerably less and saves money and natural resources. In plasma TV’s it allows for an even better picture than ever before with a lot less material needed to produce the set meaning it has less of an environmental impact on our planet as it will take up less space on the shelf and in a land fill when its usefulness has ended.
